The Tawi Fire Hub

For those who have a lot of waste wood

A large biochar making Tawi with numerous cooking surfaces.

If you have a lot of woody waste and enjoying cooking outdoors, then the Fire Hub is worth a look. As with all our Tawi stoves the Fire Hub operates and makes biochar and charcoal continuously. The large burner will accommodate a wide range of dry woody waste. An exhaust baffle allows the fire to be regulated, meaning the heat and rate of burn can be controlled. Flue gases are kept above head height by the extended chimney. To compensate for no chimney-top cooking surface, the Fire Hub has a large hotplate capable of accommodating multiple pans. In addition there is a large grill / pizza oven beneath the burner.

The Fire Hub is mounted on a sturdy wooden frame with wheels. A removable water tank collects the biochar you make.

Most gardens produce some woody waste, from fallen twigs to hedge trimmings. Once seasoned and dried this all makes excellent fuel for the Fire Hub. Think of this waste as a resource, part of your garden’s annual harvest.

Use the finer particles of charcoal as biochar in your vegetable waste. You will produce a long lasting, carbon-rich compost full of nutrients. A compost that will also make your garden more climate resilient; draining your soil during wet weather and retaining water during droughts.

The Carbon Cycle is talked about a lot  these days. Turning the wood you burn into solid charcoal prevents the release of some of its stored carbon as carbon dioxide. Every 1kg of biochar you make is approximately 3kg of carbon dioxide that you have prevented from entering the atmosphere. This makes the Fire Hub a carbon negative stove; you are actively removing carbon from the Carbon Cycle as you cook your food.

The larger bits of biochar make excellent barbecue charcoal. With no tars or oils left the charcoal will burn cleanly after lighting, no waiting 40 minutes. The charcoal does need to be completely dry before being burnt.
