The Social Tawi

Socialising with Fire

Entertaining outdoors is one of the joys of summer.

Whether in your back garden with a group of friends or your allotment with fellow gardeners, the Social Tawi is a great ecological alternative to a traditional barbecue.

The Tawi is designed to make high quality biochar. It does this by removing the burning wood in its charcoal phase at exactly the right time. The charcoal is quenched in a water bath which enhances its properties for use in your compost.

While we think the Social Tawi is good value for money, we appreciate it can be hard to find the funds if you are a club or society. With its three cooking surfaces the Social Tawi is a consummate and versatile outdoor stove. It has the capacity to cater for a large gathering of people. A barbecue event can be a great fund raiser; what better way to recoup the cost of your Social Tawi!

Most gardens produce some woody waste, from fallen twigs to hedge trimmings. Once seasoned and dried this all makes excellent fuel for the Social Tawi. Think of this waste as a resource, part of your garden’s annual harvest.

The Social Tawi has three sizeable and distinct cooking surfaces; a top wood-gas burner, a hotplate and a grill. These make it a very versatile stove.

You can cater easily for a group; for example: fry burgers or sausages on the top burner, and onions on the hotplate while toasting buns under the grill. Make a batch of chutney or jam; the top burner will bring a large preserving pan to the boil.

Charcoal comes in may different forms. Each is referred to by a different name. Barbecue charcoal is dense and full of tars and oils. Biochar is light and friable. Activated carbon is very light and has an extremely large internal surface area. Our tests show that our ‘porous charcoal’ falls between biochar and activated carbon. It is light weight and sponge like. This gives it very similar properties to activated carbon; it is very good at adsorbing odours and numerous contaminants dissolved in water. It also makes an excellent compost additive, which is better than many commercially available biochars. The Social Tawi in unique amongst biochar making stoves in that it can be run continuously. The porous charcoal it makes drops into a water tank below the stove.

The Carbon Cycle is talked about a lot  these days. Turning the wood you burn into solid charcoal prevents the release of some of its stored carbon as carbon dioxide. Every 1kg of porous charcoal you make is approximately 3kg of carbon dioxide that you have prevented from entering the atmosphere. This makes the Social Tawi a carbon negative stove; you are actively removing carbon from the Carbon Cycle as you cook your food.
